The Sacred Island of Iona

Just across from Mull, lies the Isle of Iona, once called Innis nan Dhruidhanean, the Isle of the Druids. There is a crumbling ruin of an old Mary Chapel behind the great Abbey. It is said that on the Isle of Iona, the veil between earth and heaven are so thin that pilgrims here can easily access spiritual dimensions.

하늘과 땅 사이가 가장 가깝다는 스코틀랜드의 외딴 섬, 세상에서 가장 오래된 바위, 아이오나 섬은 푸른 바다의 물결과 하늘의 구름마저 같은 색이어서 뭍에 서 있어도 파도 위에 떠 있는 느낌이다. 섬 한가운데 세운 세인트 마틴의 켈트 십자가 밑에서 이 섬 을 바라보면 온통 영혼의 신비함이 가득 채워지는 느낌을 가지게 한다.

그라스고 (Glasgow) 공항에서내려 버스를 타고 오반에 (Oban) 내린다. 그곳에서 하루 머물고 다음날 아침에 배로 뮬섬 (Mull)에 가서 다시 아이오나로 가는 페리를 타고 45분을 더 항해하면 아이오나 섬에 도착한다.
외지고 별 볼일 없는 아이오나 섬(Iona Island)이 성지로 순례자의 기도가 그치지 않는 것은, 콜롬바 성인(521~597) 가 이곳에서 스코트랜드의 선교을 처음 시작했기 때문이다. 바람 거센 황량한 아이오나 섬에 정착하여 수도원을 세우고 선교사의 임무를 다한 콜롬바는 아일랜드의 도네갈 귀족 가문에서 태어났다. 정규교육을 받고 수도원 운동을 폈던 그는 주후 563년에 첫 순례의 길에 오른다. 예수님처럼 12명의 제자를 거느리고 자신이 옮겨 쓴 시편성경을 옆에 끼고, 아일랜드를 떠나 스코틀랜드 서해안에 있는 작은 섬, 아이오나에 닻을 내렸다. 그곳에 세운 수도원은 스코틀랜드와 북부 잉글랜드에 기독교와 켈트 수도원을 전파하는 중심지가 됐다.

남아프리카 공화국의 인종차별 반대운동에 이바지한 공로로 1984년 노벨 평화상을 받았다.
코사족과 츠와나족 부모에게서 태어나 아버지가 교사로 있던 남아프리카 공화국 그리스도교 계통 학교에서 공부했다. 의사가 되고 싶었으나 학비를 감당할 수 없어서 포기하고 1954년에 교사가 되었다. 1957년 교사직을 그만두었고, 1961년 성공회 교구사제로 임명되어 요하네스버그에 있는 신학교에서 강의했다. 1960년대말 런던으로 유학해 런던 킹스 칼리지에서 석사학위를 받았고, 1972∼75년 세계교회협의회(WCC)의 부의장을 지냈으며, 1975∼76년 흑인으로서는 최초로 요하네스버그 대성당의 수석사제가 되었다. 1978년 남아프리카 교회협의회 의장에 임명되었고, 남아프리카 흑인의 권리를 옹호하는 주요대변인이 되었다. 비폭력 저항을 강조하고, 남아프리카 공화국의 교역국들에게 남아프리카 공화국에 경제압력을 가하도록 촉구했다. 그는 인종차별 정책의 반대자들이 폭력을 사용하는 것을 비난하면서, 대신에 흑인 및 백인 공동체 간의 평화로운 협상을 통한 화해를 모색했다.

The Taizé Community is an ecumenical monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. It is composed of more than one hundred brothers, from Catholic and Protestant traditions, who originate from about thirty countries across the world.
떼제 공동체(The Taizé Community)는 프랑스의 부르고뉴 지방 남부의 손 에 로와르(Saône-et-Loire)에 있는 떼제(Taizé)에 위치한, 1940년 프랑스 개신교 수도자인 로제 수사에 의해 창설된 에큐메니컬 성격의 기독교 수도회이다. 대한민국에서는 주로 로마 가톨릭교회에 의해 소개되어 가톨릭에 의해 운영되는 수도원으로 잘못 아는 경우도 있으나, 창시자 로제 수사는 개신교인으로 가톨릭에 구애받지 않으므로, 어느 교단에도 소속되지 않은 초교파 단체이다. 현재 공동체에는 25개국 출신의 남성 수도자들이 모여 기도와 묵상을 중심으로 공동생활을 하고 있다.
